PARAGON CAUSE – “LET ME BE”

A SPILL EXCLUSIVE MUSIC PREMIERE

“Let Me Be”the newest single from Ottawa’s Paragon Cause, sees the band move away from their indie electronica roots finding a comfortable sound in the realms of 60’s soul with a hint of gospel. The song takes the underlying gospel structure and updates the sound with their characteristic touch of electronica, giving the lush, wall of sound soul song a modern revision.  Michelle Opthof’s performance history in gospel music and musical theatre, provided her with the skills and talent to achieve a performance matching some of the classic vocalists of the 60’s, particularly her powerful and complex vocal harmonies. The powerful musical performance provides just enough energy to move the vocal performance along to its stunning climax.

Like the duo’s recent album, Lies Between Us (2019) and upcoming 2020 album, What We Started, the duo recorded Let Me Be during their sessions with musician/producer Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes.  Sune Rose’s fingerprints are all over the song, from the lo-fi reverb drenched drums to the inspired harmonies influenced by some of the great 60’s soul singers. By utilizing a modern approach to instrumentation, sampling techniques and sound design, the end result is an emotional plea both musically and lyrically, to reminisce about a time when people appreciated the simpler things in life. Its represents an admission that the current trend towards commercialism in the world is too much and sometimes, we all need a break. Of course, this also includes a nod to the stress of the holidays, making the song somewhat of an “anti holiday’ song.

Artist Quote

“Let Me Be was a true collaboration between Jamie, Myself and Sune Rose. We wanted to write a song that allowed you to stop for a moment, relax and just forget about the stress of any holiday and be left alone while the world spins around you.” ~Michelle Opthof of Paragon Cause
